Broccoli no good

The broccoli flowered and the stalks were all woody so they have been excised and replaced with seedlings from the store. The brassica patch fully weeded and the whole patch watered.

Peas flowering

Flowering peas. Lettuces planted into the patch. Radishes turning red. All
Good.

Planted Miners Lettuce directly into the patch along with Minutia Lettuce and Arugula. Summer queen lettuces from pots germinated inside. Carrots have germinated.

Not much happened

Didnt get much done over the weekend due to deconstruction of old chicken run and weather, but sewed more lettuces and got 3 squash into the patch. Tomatoes are starting to flower. Must get seeds into the patch real soon, as the year is getting on a bit.

Was I too early?

Spend the weekend moving the 7 cabbage into the patch - found room amongst the other brassicas.  Was also given a load of sugar snap peas by my neighbour (thanks Vicky) - her mother had germinated what looks like a whole packed and passed on those she didn't want to Vicky who passed on those she didn't want to me (and I passed a whole tone back).

Two of the beans germinated - was it too cold overnights?  I've re-sewn a load in pots along with more cucumbers (coz only 1 germinated).  Lettuce should grow year round here so I'm trying to germinate seeds (18 in total).  Come Labour weekend it should be time for carrots and the multitude of lettuce-like seeds to be sewn directly into the beds.

Zucchini and Sunflowers

Zucchini don't like being constrained and they grow quickly.  So those that had germinated went into the patch - a total of 7 (I think).  2 of the sunflowers had germinated so they were transplanted at the same time.  The tomatoes I was given for father's day need to get planted into containers - I guess I'll have to get some tomato mix tomorrow.

Brassicas

9 Cauliflower and 9 Kalettes went into the vegetable patch.  One of the three beds is now full of brassicas and so it'll be necessary to keep them out of the other beds for crop rotation purposes.  That is, next yearn brassica are not allowed in this bed, they'll all be in a different bed.

All up, cauliflower, broccoli, kalettes in the bed.  Bed if full.

Other plants in the green room have germinated, including these zucchini

Broccoli

13 of the broccoli were ready to be planted out, so there were so.  The cauliflower and cabbage are ready to go too, but there wasn't enough time tonight to get it done.  The Zucchini are beginning to show signs of life and might even be ready to go into the patch by the end of the weekend.

Rotten beans

The beans did not germinate. In fact, they appear to have been too cold and too wet so they simply vanished into the soil. A new set have been sewn.

Peas went into the patch as they were getting too large for the pots.

Brassicas are doing well, but not ready to go into the patch.

Signs of life

The seeds are starting to sow signs of life - brassicas don't take long to germinate.  Also, into the patch, went the first seedlings (from the store), this time silverbeet.

Aldo planted into pots:
Zucchini, Zephyr F1
Squash, Pink Banana Jumbo
Cucumber, English Greengrocer
Rhubarb, Red Cherry
Kalettes, Flower Sprouts F1

Pottles

Since the beds are (basically) ready for planting, its time to turn seeds into seedlings.  Over this weekend the following went into pots:

Cauliflower - violet Sicilian
Broccoli - tender stem F1
Cabbage - copenhagen market
Tomato - Baxter's early bush
Camomile - German
Catnip (for the cat, that is).

Also, of a large variety:

Pea - Blue shelling
Bean - California red kidney

The pea and bean were soaked for a day before planting in potting mix (you can see them soaking in the picture below).

2017

Its 2017.  A new season and with it a new veggie patch.  It was completely re-built over the winter by Jason Ross of Habitate.  It wasn't cheap, but he also cleared a forest, built a chicken run, planted an orchard and installed drainage in the areas that become a boggy swamp.  Thanks Jason.
